Philips UV-C

Inactivating Germs with the Power of Light

Certainty in an Uncertain World

We are living through unprecedented times as the world faces a global pandemic. The world is calling for proven, effective ways to protect people from the threat of disease.

Many types of bacteria and viruses can cause infection. These pathogens can survive in the air, on surfaces and on objects, even after routine cleaning. This means residual contamination in the air we breathe and on the surfaces we touch can affect our health and everyday wellbeing.

Germ Inactivation with UV-C

UV-C light helps inactivate germs and prevent their spread in the air and on surfaces contaminated with bacteria and viruses. All microorganisms tested to date have responded to UV-C light.

Philips UV-C Disinfection Luminaires

With 35 years of experience in UV-C lighting, we have built strong application expertise. This has enabled us to develop new UV-C luminaires and disinfection chambers suitable for offices, retail stores, factories, hospitality areas, schools, public restrooms and even transport such as aircraft, buses and trains.

Shining a Light with UV Technology

UV-C radiation is well known for inactivating germs in the air and on surfaces and objects, helping to reduce the risk of infection.

What Is UV Light Technology?

Ultraviolet (UV) light is invisible to the human eye and is divided into UV-A, UV-B and UV-C.

UV-C covers the wavelength range of 100-280 nm, with germicidal action peaking at 265 nm. Philips low-pressure UV-C lamps have their main emission at 254 nm, where DNA response is 85% of the peak value. As a result, our germicidal lamps are highly effective at destroying the DNA and RNA of microorganisms, meaning they can no longer reproduce or cause disease.

This technology is used primarily in areas at risk of microbiological contamination and has been used safely and effectively for more than 40 years.

Surface Applications

When people cough, sneeze or exhale, they release droplets. Most of these droplets land on nearby surfaces and objects such as desks, tables or phones. If the droplets carry a virus, employees can become infected by touching contaminated surfaces or objects and then touching their eyes, nose or mouth.

Object Disinfection

Viruses can survive on surfaces for up to 5 days, so equipment that is frequently touched or shared between people can pose a high risk. Introducing a daily disinfection process for items that are reused or recharged helps ensure that viruses and bacteria are destroyed.
